Carel Fabritius signed and dated ‘The Goldfinch’ in 1654. That same year, Fabritius died in a gunpowder explosion that not only destroyed his studio and most of his paintings, but also a quarter of the city of Delft, Netherlands. ‘The Goldfinch’ was found more than 200 years later in the possession of a former Dutch army officer and collector. The painting is the MacGuffin of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning eponymous novel by Donna Tartt, which was turned into a film in 2019.
