Canada’s Justin Trudeau receives awkward schoolboy lectures from China’s Xi Jinping at G-20
During a meeting on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had an exchange in which Mr. Xi blamed the Canadian Prime minister for spreading details of an earlier meeting between the two leaders at the summit.
Mr. Xi told Mr. Trudeau that he would be very upset if information from their meeting was leaked, according to a Mandarin interpreter.
The Canadian prime minister appeared to be surprised by the rebuke and responded by saying he was “sorry” and that he would “take full responsibility.”
The Chinese president’s rebuke came after reports surfaced in Canadian media that Mr. Trudeau had divulged details of his discussion with Mr. Xi about the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and China with Canadian officials. It is unclear if Mr. Trudeau was the source of the leaks.
The incident underscores the mounting tensions between China and the Western world, as Beijing strives to assert its global economic and political clout. It also comes at a time when Trudeau is looking to bolster Canada’s trade relations with China.
