Rishi Rajpopat, a 27-year-old student at the University of Cambridge, has successfully deciphered a rule set forth by Panini, a renowned linguist from ancient India who lived approximately 2,500 years ago. Sanskrit, the language spoken by Panini and currently only used by approximately 25,000 people in India, is a sacred language in Hinduism and has a rich history in India’s literature, science, philosophy, and poetry.

Rajpopat spent nine months attempting to solve the problem and had a breakthrough while studying at Cambridge. Panini’s grammar, called the Astadhyayi, used a system similar to an algorithm to properly conjugate and form grammatically correct words and sentences using the base and suffix of a word.
