Apple workers in China have been escaping from their workplaces due to the Covid restrictions.

Factory workers at a Shanghai facility that produces Apple products rioted on Thursday, clashing with guards in hazmat suits and jumping over security barriers in an apparent mutiny against the strict coronavirus restrictions, as seen in dramatic social media videos.

This news is coming more than a month into Shanghai’s citywide lockdown, during which desperate locals have been restricted to their apartments without adequate food for some, as police patrol the streets.

Meanwhile, many facilities in Shanghai, including the Apple factory, have sought to keep operating during the lockdown through a “closed loop” production system. Under this system, employees are generally not allowed to leave company facilities even during their off hours, and they are forced to live and sleep at the factory or a nearby dormitory. They are not permitted to see other people – including members of their family members.

A video broadcast by US government-sponsored news service Radio Free Asia showed hordes of enraged employees in white shirts gliding over and storming barricades as guards in hazardous-materials gear attempted to rein them in.
