Chelsea Handler Thinks the Sun and Moon were the same thing until she got to 40
Comedian Chelsea Handler recently revealed on “The Tonight Show” that she didn’t realize until she was 40 that the sun and moon were separate entities. During the interview, Handler talked about her comedy special “Revolution” which premiered on Netflix in December. She also shared some of the jabs she made at herself during the special, including her longstanding confusion about basic astronomy knowledge.
Handler stated that she doesn’t want to be a parent because she doesn’t think she has the skills or tolerance to answer children’s questions, especially when it comes to things she doesn’t know. She gave an example of her confusion by telling the host Jimmy Fallon that until she was 40, she thought that the sun and moon were the same thing.
Handler recalled the moment when she learned the truth seven years ago while on a safari trip to Africa with her sister Simone Handler-Hutchinson. Her sister pointed out to her that it was rare to see both the sun and the moon at the same time, to which Handler responded, “Wait, but they’re always together.”
Realizing her mistake, she tried to backtrack her statement but her sister pressed on, asking her to explain her understanding of the relationship between the sun and the moon. Handler confessed, “I thought that when the sun set, it reappeared as the moon.”
