On Monday, Netflix announced that it has ordered an untitled animated series set in the universe of the popular show Stranger Things. The plot details of the new series are being kept secret, but its creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have stated that it will be similar to 1980s-era “Saturday morning cartoons” such as Masters of the Universe, Jem and the Holograms, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and G.I. Joe.
It is unclear whether any of the original show’s beloved cast will be involved in the animated series as voice actors. Sydney-based animation house Flying Bark is producing the show, while Eric Robles, best known for Nickelodeon’s Fanboy & Chum Chum, is the showrunner. The Duffer brothers, as well as Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps, will serve as executive producers.
The animated series is the latest addition to the franchise, with the Duffer brothers announcing a London stage show, a fifth and final season of the flagship series, and an untitled live-action spinoff. Despite the typically longer production time for animated series, they are typically cheaper to produce than live-action shows and perform well on streaming platforms.
