Doyle Brunson, a renowned figure in the world of poker and known as the “Godfather of Poker,” has passed away at the age of 89. The Texas native died in Las Vegas, a city where he achieved great success by winning 10 World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournaments and two world championships.
In a statement released by his agent Brian Balsbaugh, Brunson’s family described him as a cherished Christian man, husband, father, and grandfather. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988, Brunson became an ambassador for the game of poker.
Brunson’s journey into professional poker began after a knee injury abruptly ended his college basketball career in his home state. After relocating to Las Vegas, he quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the city’s high-stakes poker scene.
His accomplishments include being the first American to win $1 million in poker tournaments and amassing over $6 million in live tournament earnings. Brunson’s name became synonymous with the increasingly popular WSOP, with his 10 tournament-winning bracelets standing as the second-highest in history, trailing only Phil Hellmuth’s 16.
The pinnacle of his career came when he triumphed in the main event of the WSOP two years in a row, in 1976 and 1977. Notably, his starting hand in both victories was 10-2, which became known as the “Doyle Brunson” or the “Texas Dolly,” adding to his legacy.
Such was his reputation that ESPN would reportedly announce his elimination from the main event each year to the other players. In 2018, during his last WSOP game, Brunson made it to the final table before being defeated, receiving a standing ovation as he exited the room.
Even after retiring from competitive play, Brunson continued to impact the poker world through his influential books, “Super System” and “Super System 2.” Published in 1979, “Super System” is considered one of the first books to teach poker strategy and has had a lasting influence on the game.
Brunson’s career spanned the period when poker transitioned from a frowned-upon card game to a prominent activity, both in casinos and online. Fellow Hall of Famer Daniel Negreanu described him as a legend and stated that there will never be another Doyle Brunson. Five-time WSOP champion Scotty Nguyen expressed his disbelief at the news and hailed Brunson as the man, the myth, the legend, and the godfather of poker.
Survived by his wife Louise, his son Todd (also a championship-winning poker player), and his daughter Pam, Brunson leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of poker.
