See The Reason for That answer below:
This daring couple managed to steal $1.7 million worth of fine wine from a Michelin-starred restaurant adjacent to their hotel, which is quite an audacious feat. CNN reported that the heist was meticulously planned, with the couple visiting the Spanish restaurant three times prior to the crime. The woman used a fake passport to check into the adjacent hotel on the night of the theft, and her boyfriend later joined her.
They enjoyed a 14-course meal at Atrio and then toured the wine cellar. Around 2 a.m., the woman called room service and ordered a salad and dessert, while the boyfriend stole an electronic key from the front desk. They then helped themselves to 45 bottles of wine, including two from French winery Chateau d’Yquem, which were wrapped in hotel towels and hidden in their bags. The couple remained at large for nine months before being caught at the Montenegro-Croatia border in July 2022.
Unfortunately, none of the stolen wine was recovered, and the couple received prison sentences of four and four-and-a-half years, respectively, for armed robbery. They will also be paying €753,000 in damages to Atrio. Despite the impressive nature of the heist, it’s a shame that the restaurant lost such valuable wines, but perhaps someone somewhere is enjoying them.
