Britain has announced new plans to tackle problem gambling as online betting and smartphone usage has increased. The proposals include online stake limits ranging from £2 ($2.49) to £15, increased affordability checks, and a new levy on betting firms to fund research and treatment for problem gamblers. Lucy Frazer, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, stated that the gambling regulations needed to be brought up to date for the digital age. The reforms also aim to give more power to gambling regulators to tackle illegal sites, restrictions on bonus offers, and greater protections for those under 25.
However, the charity group, Gambling with Lives, which supports families affected by gambling-related suicide, said the changes did not go far enough and called for an end to all gambling advertising and affordability checks at £100 of monthly losses.
The government’s proposal suggests that the most comprehensive checks should be activated when there is a net loss of £1,000 in 24 hours or £2,000 within 90 days.
Gambling with Lives co-founder, Liz Ritchie, who lost her son Jack to gambling-related suicide, said that while concessions had been made, more action was needed to reduce the harm caused by the gambling industry.
