Ira “Bob” Born, the executive of a candy company known as the “Father of Peeps,” has passed away at 98, according to Lehigh Valley News. Born was born in NYC in 1924 and grew up in Bethlehem, PA where his father had founded the candy company, Just Born Inc. in 1923. After obtaining a degree in engineering physics from Lehigh University and serving as a radar specialist and lieutenant in the Pacific during WWII, Born was accepted into medical school but instead chose to work at Just Born, where he fell in love with the candy industry.

In 1953, it was Just Born that acquired Rodda Candy Co. and with the support of an engineer, Bob designed a machine to produce marshmallow chicks in under 6 minutes, which is still used by the company today. Peeps remain Just Born’s most popular brand, with 2 billion produced annually. Bob also created the recipe for Hot Tamales and led the company as its president for over 30 years. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and will have a private funeral.
